Lower School

The primary section was opened in 1986. It quickly became very popular with a greater demand for places than were available even when two classes in each year group were started. There are now three classes in each year-group from Year 3. The makeshift classrooms lasted until September 1995 when a purpose built facility was opened. As well as large classrooms this includes a spacious library, Art room and Music room. The primary computer suite is in the main school building. In the summer of 2004 a new floor was added to the building and the EFL department and Language Support for the Upper School is housed here also.

Reception is one class of approximately 25, Year One and Year Two each consist of two classes of approximately 25 children. There are 3 classes of approximately 25 children in the other year groups. Enrolment is based on an entrance examination. Entry tests for Year 2 & 3 are sat in April of the year of entry and for the remaining classes in August. Most of the children are Sudanese, some have dual nationality and around 30% are expatriates.
The Lower School curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum. Since August 2004 we have supplemented this with the International Primary Curriculum, the fastest-growing international curriculum for Primary schools. All children study Arabic and there is a special course of Arabic for foreigners which concentrates on speaking Sudanese Arabic. For English and Maths, children are grouped according to ability. There is also Religious education with Christian Education for Christian students and Islamic Religion for the Muslim children.
The Lower School day starts at 7.45 am each day with a short assembly outside. After registration the school follows a 8 x 40-minute lesson day, with two breaks. Foundation (Years Reception to 3) follow a slightly different timetable, starting 15 minutes later and ending 20 minutes earlier than the rest of the School. After school various activities are organised – including sports, crafts, cookery etc.
Many other events are planned during the year; sport days, outings, various competitions and an annual primary musical.
