Living in Sudan

History in Brief

Unity High School was originally a girls’ school. The stimulus for establishing it in Khartoum came from the Coptic community who started a boys’ school but did not have the resources for a girls’ school at the same time. Some Coptic families approached the then Anglican Bishop, Llwellyn Gwynne, for help and in 1902 the school was opened. The Chairman of the School’s Governing Council is the Bishop of the Diocese of Khartoum of the Episcopal Church of Sudan, Rt. Rev. Ezekiel Kondo.

It moved to its present site in 1905 and acquired its current name in 1928 to reflect both that it was formed and funded by many different Christian groups in Khartoum as well as that it has always welcomed children from both Muslim and Christian families.

The school remained a girls’ school until 1985 when boys were admitted for the first time. The following year a primary section was opened in response to parents’ requests and the school currently caters for children from 4 to 18 years old (Year Reception to Year 12). Reception and Year 1 and Year 12 have become the latest addition to the School.

In 2002 the school celebrated its centenary with a special week of events and a centenary book giving the school’s history in greater detail. The School's first Year Book in 2005 was a great success.
